Subject: Machiela Newsletter #14 (Really!)
Hi all,

This really is the fourteenth update since April 1996 - of course, the
first updates weren't quite so comprehensive, perhaps, remember that
back in April, it was only me and Floyd online (or at least, he was the
first one I found).

The newsletter covered the following (introductions in brackets) :

Issue 01 - (Floyd)
Issue 02 - (Keith)
Issue 03 - (Jan)
Issue 04 - (Floyd)
Issue 05 - *Extra*
Issue 06 - (Lucinda)
Issue 07 - (Jason & Todd)
Issue 08 - (Dan/Dawn/Jennifer/Marianne)
Issue 09 - *Extra* - 19/9/96
Issue 10 - (Harry)
Issue 11 - (Troy)
Issue 12 - (Ans)
Issue 13 - (Amy & Paul)

At some stage, I'll publish the other issues on my homepage - I got a
message back from Paul the other day in which he mentioned that it felt
like he was dropped in the middle of a conversation - fair comment, I
guess. So in order to avoid that, I figured it is only fair that I
publish the other introductions for people to read. Watch my page over
the next week or so, for developments.

-------

While on the subject of developments, I spent a productive sunday
afternoon in a cafe, scribbling diagrams on serviettes with a friend of
mine who writes web-page for a living, he's offered his services to
create a fully automatic web-page / family tree with a search engine,
which will contain all the data I have tracked so far in an
easy-to-look-at format. It will also include any pictures I have
collected, and any other information I might have on individuals
(including the sources of the information).

To this end, I am going to need some help. After speaking to my dad, it
is becoming more and more obvious that in order to do anything properly,
I'm going to need accurate records, and proper sources for them. With
that I mean, official records like Church records such as Birth,
Marriage and Death certificates, also Census information, perhaps copies
of immigration records, citizenship records, that sort of thing.

Also, I'm looking for copies of family portraits (or reproductions of
paintings, if there are any), with details of who is in the picture.

Please send as much information and/or pictures as you have - I'd much
rather be flooded than starved when it comes to information.

Since my house is actively on the market, I don't really have a
permanent address right now, however, my father has volunteered to be a
"clearing-house" for any mail you might want to send - his address is :

Jan A. Machiela

((address withheld))
Hawkes Bay
New Zealand

Please drop me an email first so I'll know something's on the way.

-------

After another web-search, I have located a public library in Michigan,
where apparently there is a stack of information on the Machiele family,
unfortunately although the library is online, the information is not yet
- if any of the Michigan residents feel like spending an afternoon or
two in a library, the address is :

Ralph Haan Genealogist
Herrick Public Library
300 S. River Avenue
Holland, MI 49423

email : holrh@lakeland.lib.mi.us
home page :

Here's a quote from one of his messages :

>Jack- we do in fact have quite a bit of material about the Machiela
familes.Hopefully you could have someone from the area get it for you.
We are just learning all about the net and as you can see we have a
rather extensive collection of Dutch genaealogies. The sad part is that
we do not have them on line.
>One other possiblity is to photocopy the pages and send them to you.
This would only be from the genealogies- we have other materials such as
obituaries, church records and census.
>I do not have time to do the research so you will have to find another
person to get the material for you.

I'm happy to get the genealogies photocopied by him, however, I would
also love a copy of the other materials, so if anyone lives close to
Holland, Michigan, and is bored one Saturday, please drop me a line...

-------

Another interesting snippet : during one of my web-searches, I came
across an ancient but very interesting reference to a Machiele-Mie, who
lived in Brabant, The Netherlands, in 1731AD.

For those of you with WWW-access, take a look at
"http://www.xs4all.nl/~defonte/d_2.txt", and do a search on "Machiele" -
be forewarned, the site is in Dutch, and some of the language is pretty
obscure, what with it being written in a 1700's dialect... Good luck.

In brief, it appears that Machiele-Mie, the daughter of Hans Jacobs; was
married to Gouwe Jan, who was hanged in Luik. She then married to
Willem, a tobacco salesman.

She was an accomplice of a Jan Dirks, who received the death penalty for
vagabondery and burglary of a church in St. Job in 't Goor. Apparently
this unsavoury Jan Dirks character had a bit of a confession going
there, apparently in an attempt to get off the death sentence
(unsuccesfully). It's always amazing how a bit of torture will loosen
the tongue. The record didn't state what happened to our ancestor
(although a family fued between the Machiela's and the Dirks' seems
unlikely at this point).

It's quite a gruesome site, with some questionable-taste pictures of the
various interrogation techniques scattered around the site. However,
from a historical viewpoint, it's well worth a visit.

-------

On the home(page) front, Ans has her new homepage up and running, the
location is listed at the end of this message, along with all the
others..

-------

As alway, if I've missed any vital information or gotten any of your
addresses wrong, let me know.

Anyway, I'm away again... till next time.... and good night...
