Subject: Found Cyber-Machiela #15 !

Hi all,

I know - this update is so quick, some of you will no doubt find two of
them in your mailbox at the same time. I'll make this update a bit
shorter than the last one.

-------
As a result of my last mailout, I got a note from Todd with some links
to other Machiela's on the Web (check out my homepage below), and I
followed one of them. The link mentioned a snailmail address for Ans
Machiela, so I checked an online email address database
(http://www.whowhere.com/), and quickly found her email address.

Ans mentioned that she's looking for others with the same last name -
Well have we got a pleasant surprise for ya!

-------
On a more historical note, here are some sketchy details on our combined
history:

As far as I can make out, the Machiela family started in Friesland, in
the Netherlands, in a small area called "Het Bilt", where the entire
Machiela family lived from at least 1750 AD. The first traveller went to
Michigan in 1909, and another one went in 1929. My family came to New
Zealand a lot more recently - December 1980 to be exact. From what I can
gather, most of the Machiela's in Holland still live in Friesland, but
I'm no expert there - perhaps Jan or Ans can fill us in on more details
there - I have no details on either of their branches, other than what
Jan has provided me.

Regarding the origins of the Machiela name : rumour has it that in
around 1600, a scottish (Irish?) sailor was ship-wrecked off the
Friesian coast, whose name may have been "MacKellar", or something along
those lines. What with the small number of people able to read&write
back then, the name has been changed from the original "MacKellar", into
Magiela, and then into Machiela. In America, there appears to be a trend
to turn it into Machiele, however there are also cases where the parents
are "Machiele", and the sons are "Machiela". Pronounciations also vary
widely, with some areas pronouncing it as "Masheele", and others as
"Makeela", while the Dutch pronuonciation seems more like "Maggiela"
(with that lovely Dutch gutteral "G" that seems impossible for
foreigners to achieve).

Note that although the ship-wreck story is rumour and speculation only,
I have heard it from the American branch also, so it's fairly
wide-spread. If anyone has more details or even a better story, please
let me know...

-------

Finally, I suddenly remembered that there's a new Machiela on the tree
(although I don't have an address for her - Todd
(TMachiela@Email.FPL.Com) married Jennifer Johnson on the 19th of
October, in Chattanooga, Tennessee ! Congratulations to you both from
all of us on this list, I'm sure!

-------
Anyway, it's late here, 2:30am on a Saturday night, and my Pink Floyd CD
has just finished, I'm off to bed. Have a good day/night, wherever you
all are, and as usual, please send me ANY updates, tidbits, gossip,
links or whatever, as long as it has ANYTHING to do with the name
"Machiela".
